Hotel History
The roaring 20’s saw Michigan Avenue open as a chic boulevard of clubs, shops and hotels as developers sought to transform the area into the Champs-Elysees of the United States. Opened to great fanfare in 1924, The Allerton was one of the first high-rises on North Michigan Avenue.
The Allerton’s swanky Tip-Top-Tap lounge on the 23rd floor – the sign still graces the hotel tower – quickly became a Chicago hot spot. During the 1950’s the hotel gained nationwide recognition when radio personality Don McNeil broadcast his show “The Breakfast Club” from the lounge in the 1950’s. This popular radio program reached millions and famous Hollywood legends like Bob Hope, Danny Kaye, Ginger Rogers, and James Stewart were featured guests.
In June of 1998 the City of Chicago designated The Allerton as an historic landmark and a $60 million renovation project was launched. Today guests experience the charming history of the property complimented by luxurious accommodations and state-of-the-art facilities.
